Feels like home
Transitioning into some North Queensland shots. Cairns is in the tropics and as such has no shortage of rain. The area is full of rainforest and of course the Great Barrier Reef. This is a shot of the beach suburb where i grew up and spent the first 20 years of my life. Although my life is in Brisbane it still feels like home when i go back to Cairns.
I spent so much of my youth on this beach. Fishing from the rock groin to the left. Exploring the rocks. My brother and I taught ourselves to surf in the beach in front in the middle of cyclone with 30 foot waves on what was almost an ironing board that we bought for $15. The strange blue lines are a stinger enclosure. Cairns is full of slightly dangerous wildlife. The stinger enclosure allows you to swim in summer when the waters are full of deadly box jellyfish. Trouble is smaller irikanji jellyfish sometimes get in as well as sea snakes. From time to time crocodiles have been moved on from the beach. The joys of living in paradise.

This time, the calm invades everything! Lovely, Nev. P.D. What is the inclined line just upon the horizon?
nev: Thanks Jose. the lines are for an enclosure to keep out box jellyfish. here is a link which may translate better.

Lovely lovely shot.
nev: thank you bridge
What gorgeous light. It almost looks like ice on the water but being Cairnes, it can't be. I became familiar with blue bottles, a teeny type of jellyfish, when I was in AU. Beautiful photo.
nev: Yeah ice melts real quick in Cairns Mary. The blue bottles are the weak little cousins of the Irukandji and Box jellyfih. though a very large bluebottle of chinese man-o-war can in certain cases be fatal. i have a friend that nearly died from an Irukandji sting to his face. He was in hospital for a couple of weeks on the largest dose of morphine and still in utter pain and his heart stopped a number of times. He was lucky to survive and the Irukandji are small compared to a boxjellyfish.
Beautiful shot. Only been up there once in 1992, must go back again.
nev: yep it is a beautiful part of the world but is being developed at a very quick pace. Councils of past were quick to stop high rise developments and devlopments on the hills around cairns. the current council does not have the same thoughts. thanks oz.
This looks very refreshing, especially compared to your recent posts. Looks like a great place to grow up even with the dangers lurking beneath the paradisaical surface.
nev: we grew up with a lot of independence Martin. the bush that we used to run around in was full of deadly snakes, wild pigs, spiders etc. we used to swim and play in mangrove creeks that had crocodiles in them. and you tell that to the kids today and they won't believe you.
Very beautiful picture Nev... So peaceful ! I like !
nev: glad you like it roland. thanks
Love this picture. Is it nearing dusk? You have the place pretty much to yourself...did the stingers carry off the bathing crowds? Love your narrative as well.
nev: This was at sunrise. It was starting to rain to the early morning walkers were probably all at home. thanks Ray
You really trying to make us here in the UK jealous Nev? lol Now you owe Sinem & I a plane ticket to Australia to visit to make up for this uttermost insult of insults LOL
Suby
nev: Are you really sure you want to go there Suby. We all know how you hate crawling things. You know in the rainforests of North Queensland that there are bird eating spiders. just cause a spider can eat a bird though is nothing to be scared of.i would be more worried about deadly redbacks which are tiny and like to live in toilets and cupboards.
A few tinnies, chuck a rod out, sit back & relax...mmmmmmmmmmmm!
nev: *crack* *fzzzzzzzz* *aaahhhhh*
It's beautiful Nev. It sounds likeyou have a lot of fond childhood memories here. Thank you very much for sharing them with us. The photo is exquisite.
nev: I had a great childhood and was very lucky to experience it. My children do not enjoy the same freedom we had then. thanks kay
FANTASTIC Nev ! Paradise on earth ! Great work on the shutterspeed !
nev: thanks for the fantastic comment florence
It's beautiful Neal, it really is
nev: I agree it doesn't look too bad from this angle ellie.
Careful Nev you will scare away the tourists! Love the lighting here Nev
nev: We couldn't have that Daniel could we. Especially all those cashed up mexicans.
your slow shutter speed works in tandem with your blog - as though the scene slows whilst the memories flood back and enough time to think them. Love your blog today.
nev: Thanks heaps Jose. It is interesting how a single place can hold so many memories. Taking the shots i was reminded of things like surfing with porpoises, fish i had caught etc.
You know what ? It's a real pleasure to see some water
Great composition here too ! A beautiful seascape !!
nev: yeah it is not all craked earth and dry dams over here zeb. thanks
it is paradise Neal, I can see why this place has so much personal attachment for you, it is not only beautiful but your childhood memories will be with you forever. A wonderful place and a beautiful photograph.
nev: My brother and i spent a lot of our childhood here Mal. Those were the days when you would disappear in the morning and come home when you were hungry and the disappear again until nightfall. There was less than a thousand people living here when i was young and we used to sometimes play bike games where about 30 or 40 kids were chasing one another. It was a bit of a childrens paradise if you didn't mind the odd taipan or death adder snake in your house from time to time.
This is a beautiful shot - the light is captivating
nev: thanks pb i was lucky to get a few morning shots.
Beautiful light in this one - would like to see just a little more of the water to the right in the pic
nev: I know what you mean aksel. the water is there in the original. I had some polarizer/neutral density corners which i didn't feel like processing out and went for a crop instead. i agree with what you are saying entirely.
A magical photo. It looks like paradise, but you've scared me off. Too many dangers lurk for a scaredy-cat like me.
